Yes I agree.Far better to do it yourself than complain and do nothing, but please in future just push the half eaten kebabs etc out of sight because discarded takeaways are a big help in keeping the hedgehog population alive now.

I enjoyed your "Snow story" video and hope you have lots and lots more snow this year.

I think you put some very good points across Tony especially about the fencing round schools now. My old school looks like a prison fortress with the same type of fencing as you showed in your video.

My old school still has barb wire fencing and 12ft fences. There was a playground surrounded with fencing and barb wire on top.

Thanks for your views people. I just think that it is a sign of how paranoid and fearful society has become today when our kids are educated in 'concentration camps' and that people feel it is more worrying that a 48 year old single man is filming outside a school than it is that he is picking up hyperdermic needles (two this week) , dog shit and litter in an alleyway where the lamp post has been vandalised and there is graffitti...

... or more responsible owners (the other owners can go in the dog shit bin).

I've tried to train my dogs - but they just cannot aim that high !

The bins only on the beach and parks not near my home. Having a stubborn I can only go where he wants to go, ending carrying the bag for 15 mins. I take him in and go out again to put in it the dog shit bin.

What ITK says about Dog owners being irresponsible is right. At the same time we pay our Council Taxes in return for services and in a lot of areas these days bins of all descriptions are disappearing fast. It is not always practical for someone to take their rubbish with them all day until they can get home to put it in their bin and so more bins are required. I also think that the very existence of bins and the constantly visible therefore example of people using them also helps to teach little ones about correct social behavoir. I often get a little girl or boy with their Mum or Dad point a finger at me and ask 'What are you doing?'. This is why I believe there should be Council street cleaning staff on duty at all times during the day and not just at 5-9AM in the morning. When people see me 'doing my job' it DOES make them take note of what they are doing.

I have to say though that ITK's argument this time does hold sway. If people were more responsible then the country would be a much nicer place to live.

I'm glad that you liked 'A Snow Story' Honey honey! It was filmed at a place called Church-in-the-Wood near to where I live. I wrote it after I tried to catch a snowflake on my way home from work -(seems a LONG time ago now...) wearing a pair of brown leather gloves. Its a track from one of my unreleased albums - I have loads of stuff 'in the can' but cannot do anything with any of it unless I want to end up bankrupt!

As far as your point about Hedgehogs go, I haven't seen one in Hollington in the 25 plus years I have lived here. Like so many traditionally British things they are dying out as the modern world and uncaring developers take away their natural habitat. I will see what I can do in future but I really don't want to encourage more people to leave half eaten kebabs lying about so its a tough one...

It certainly is. If only people would remove the wrapping and drop the food into the long grass it would be perfect. Except foxes eat the same food and we all know what else foxes eat!
Actually, (I am a hedgehog carer) I find that if the foxes are well fed they tend to not bother the hogs.

Folkestone and Medway council have litter police on patrol all the time, you can see the changes straightaway, dropping one dog end is £60 compare that to price of fags. More councils should it and so should Thanet.

We have a lady that picks up litter with a cart. I am not sure how dedicated she is to the task because I once saw her tossing her cigarette end behind her And we have "offenders" to do the patches of grass and the park. Their "keeper" is a bit ferocious and shouts so much that I once had to tell him off. I would sooner put up with the litter than have that thug near us.

Thanet does well enough with its street cleaners,do we really need an extra layer of 'gestapo'?

I am not a supporter of 'on the spot fines' or fining people in general because I feel the resentment a fine causes is more likely to make an 'offender' repeat the crime all the more in spite (albeit being more careful that they are not being observed) to get their own back. What would be more helpful I feel would be to have more street wardens about whose brief would be to engage people in conversation with a view to encouraging them to change their behavoir. Whenever I am out and about (people think I am official) if I see someone doing something they shouldn't and they know I've seen them I simply go up to them and bring up the subject of who I am, what I do and tell them that I do not get paid for any of it. I then ask them nicely if they might 'do me a favour' in future by being more thoughtful and then I leave it with them. 99.9% of people if spoken to with respect and courtesy will listen and respond politely. They may not change their ways immediately but given time to think on it without having been threatened they might... What we need to do today is re-build community spirit and learn how to talk to each other without fear again. Fining, punishing and 'waving big sticks' only creates a F**K you attitude.
