Because the police would have to admit that the child was alive and left alone if there was to be a prosecution.

Well, they could have found out for sure if the twins had been drugged or not if they hadn't refused to have them checked by doctors.

I believe they have already made a deal for film rights.

It is hardly the same thing to inadvertently leave your child behind and race back to get her, as (supposedly) repeatedly leaving three toddlers to dine some distance away KNOWING that they had been crying.

I think the risk of child kidnap is extremely low. Children are at far more risk doing everyday things, but to leave them is neglectful, and emotionally abusive. (as defined by protection agencies)

I am inclined to believe Kate's mother when she insisted that her daughter would "absolutely never ever leave her children unattended" and that it was not the way of the family.
Assuming that the mother knows her child inside out (they seem very close) there must have been a significant reason for her to act out of character.
