I mentioned that in the late 1170s Fes in Morocco (where I spent New Year) was the biggest city in the world. I quote the unreliable Wikipedia but it does seem to confirm that fact which I find amazing. Bet very few have even heard of Fes (one of my favourite cities for 45 years)...

1180 - Estimation: Hangzhou, capital of Southern Song China, becomes the largest city of the world, taking the lead from Fes in the Almohad Empire.
