50p tax? It was 95p under Wilson's Old Labour 11 Years, 5 Months ago
That's what I paid in 1965 on my Everyone's Gone To The Moon royalties. Still left me enough to buy a house and become an independent record producer (my follow up It's Good News Week didn't feature me as lead singer - I wrote and produced it and made enough money to discover, name and produce - and pay for - Genesis).

Jonathan since that time when you had the hit "Everyones Gone To The Moon" and purchased your house (was it the Bayswater house) ..
did you stay at the same house all these years or did you move to other places and were you ever tempted to buy a country mansion once the hits started to really pile up..

Never tempted to move; still there at this very moment, 48 years later!

Jonathan while the hits were piling up along with hosting TV shows, column writing in the mass circulation papers and everything else ..
What was your passion outside of work and what did you like to spend some of the rewards on ,,, Luxury cars, exotic holidays, fancy restaurants etc..

Spot on; I was never into drugs (where most minor celebrities were wasting their cash) or groupies (anyone who fancied me because of my image was clearly barking and I avoided sex with mad people), works of art (just bought my first painting in ages - knocked down from £480 to £69), huge mansions or expensive cars.

My leisure time was spent with music, books and films - still is - which I was lucky enough to be doing as well as enjoying the work of others. I always enjoyed travel (and ended up doing Entertainment USA on TV - and have now reflected in The Pink Marble Egg) and good food.

And lots and lots of love, which I still get from my friends and family. I've been a very lucky boy.

I must say that I don't feel anyone should ever have to pay more than half of what they earn in tax. If people have worked hard, are good at what they do and have put the hours in to become successful I think they deserve to end up well off and to be able to afford a nice lifestyle. 95p in the pound was and is obscene. While I am unemployed and at the bottom of the pile I still believe in fair play and have no problem with someone being richer than me if they have worked for it.
