Owen Jones lectures ITK 11 Years, 5 Months ago
www.independent.co.uk/voices/comment/owe...ieve-it-9086440.html

I have weekly phone calls with a friend who moved to Maidstone so her 12 year Bieber obsessed daughter could go to a better school.

She works as nurse and her rent (250 quid for one bedroom) and food eats up her entire wage. The flat has mould and damp.

Her ex-husband, 39 has been trying to get a job for 4 years now..gets about one answer for every 100 applications. Lives with his parents and pays a court ordered 5 quid a week towards his daughter. I pay for the kid's ice skating lessons so she can be a Disney On Ice star one day. Without that her talent would never be emerge.

OK she works for the cash strapped NHS (which I believe is being deliberately run down in order to sell of to private corps who have made a fortune under ghastly Nu Labour sell offs).

repeat this millions of times over and you have a huge emerging under-class.

Private corporations in the UK have never been healthier, never made bigger profits, never paid less tax and have never before been given the free run they are today.

In tired old UK a target is chosen as the sacrificial lamb by the media to demonstrate who is (falsely) the cause of Britain's woes : Benefit's Street. Welcome to modern England.

DURING their last spell in office Labour almost wrecked the British economy with their gross mismanagement and spectacular profligacy. Yet party leader Ed Miliband and his shadow chancellor Ed Balls have learnt nothing from the disaster that they helped to create.

Far from recognising how miserably their policies failed these twins of fiscal catastrophe now want to drag Britain even further to the Left through more taxation, more welfare, more debt and more state interference.

Labour's economic illiteracy and lack of credibility were on full display over the weekend as Balls set out his dogmatic socialist gospel.

With typical sophistry Balls presented this as a step towards greater fairness in our society but in reality it is just piece of ideological socialist engineering. Reeking of doctrinaire spite the measure will raise little money for the Treasury but will do serious damage to the UK economy.

btw, hedda ! You "forgot" to tell us that Australia is now planning a "bedroom tax" !!!

Great ideas soon catch on, don't they?

yes Noo Labour were apalling because they adopted Thatcherism On steroids. It's the policies that matter and Blair/Brown's Labour policies were just the beginning and dreadful.

No I posted elsewhere that NSW (not the other states) was adopting a 'Bedroom tax' for social housing tenants. I know the particular Minister as she lives in the (glorious) Southern Highlands outside Sydney where I often go for the weekends to stay on a friend's property. I've already told her 2 months ago she will have problems.."we will see" she responded.

It's structured a bit differently : they must first offer tenants smaller acommodation and if they refuse they pay the tax- about half the UK rate. Problem : there simply aren't enough smaller places to offer as successive governments have built family sized homes and like all pollies, didn't perceive that single or young marrieds would need council flats.

And of course the government hasn't maintained properties they already have and one group is already now challenging the government via Rent Tribunal who has awarded tenants compo !

And so, a silly policy that will end up backfiring and cost more to implement.

so you have not yet : proved that I lie.

But thats just the problem !

Red Ed was a Brown followers and Balls-Up was Brown's No 2 !

They are following the same failed policies all over again !!

Re "under class" - so what?
If they are too idle to benefit from the education we provide - whose fault is that?
If they then suffer as a result - again NOT my problem !

Thousands of dolers are getting jobs (they realise the gravy train is over).
If the rest turn to crime we'll simply lock them up (like we did with the Tottenham rioters).

Ah, you say (don't you?) it costs alot of money to put people in prison.
Yes - but probably not as much as you think (when we deduct the free housing that we won't be paying for / and the other benefits that they would have collected).

Besides, its a dwindling number .....

They WILL learn !

As you may know, I really loathe this little twerp. A preening, posing, pompous rentagob who comes across like a bad sitcom parody of a 1970s Labour activist, he is thus given air time by every news review going. He was at it again last night on Andrew Neil's The Week, 'explaining' what the 1970s were like to people who had actually lived through it, even though his only source was whatever history book he'd skim-read before beddy-byes. His arrogance is only matched by his stunning self-admiration. Can't we start a fund to get him sent to Albania?
