Interesting ITK...especially the bit about the lady's husband losing his job because Romanians will work for less!
An economy of low paid jobs just increases poverty, and will reduce GDP.The introduction of the minimum wage in 1997 was heralded by some as a disaster waiting to happen. In fact it was the complete reverse,we had economic growth, reduced welfare dependency...and reduced unemployment,as EU immigrants didn't flood the labour markets or introduce benefit tourism as is the case now with Eastern european gypsys.

Quite simply, people get paid what they are worth .... And any employer will want to keep his costs down (so his customers don't go somewhere cheaper !)

If you follow that argument to it's logical conclusion then we could simply do what the paymasters of The Syrian rebels do,and import cheap Indian labour, and pay them about £100 a month...and of course abuse them, and strip them of many basic rights, like drinkable water,to get justice if not paid etc.

Wealth kept inside the economy generates more wealth.Better to pay an extra 10p a coffee at Starbucks, and have the waiting staff paid a livable wage, than have to subsidise low paid workers from the state budget.
Have a look at GDP and wages, the higher the wages the higher the GDP.The Swiss for example pay much higher wages, and GDP per person is far higher than here.
Paying peanuts just so we can compete with sweatshop economies makes no economic sense. The industries that bring in large amounts of overseas investment often pay the most,Oil,banking,Media etc.
Thatcherite economics on introduction led to a doubling of unemployment, and tripling of inflation within a year of introduction. We did far worse than our european counterparts during the 80s,they paid more, had higher GDP etc.

But the customer WONT pay it - they want to be paid £10 an hour to make tee shirts then go off to buy one at a quid from Primark !
It does not make economic sense.

The film "Made In Dagenham" shows this quite well - woman fighting for equal pay (when the factory employed 40,000 people). NOW? They don't make cars there any more and employment is down to 3,200.

You would have to look at ALL the stats - including benefits and payouts - to determine a "trend".

The Isles of Scilly, for example, have an extremely high GDP - but they don't pay our ANY JSA !

Take Birmingham - where every person pays £157 to support the scroungers - or Hull where its £206 for every person -

Not very interesting - just the usual "Rent A Gob" mob.
Too many switched panelists and no debate got moving.

White Dee (she is the one with the Black kids) - had had her hair done (I wonder who paid for that?); wore a new top (I wonder who paid for that?); and seemed to have a bra that (almost) fitted (she only fiddled with the strap once during the programme). What did I say about "if its FREE there will be a queue?" Strange that no one mentioned her conviction for theft (from a former employer) - especially when she said she does want to work (don't they all !)!!!!

The one with the real attitude was the fat one from "On Benefits and Proud" - who hurled abuse at anyone who challenged her. With an attitude like that no wonder no one will employ her ! Kept going on about how much voluntary work she did (the Job Centre has forced you to do something, eh, love?)

White Dee's hair was lovely and glossy, and hooray for the bra!
I think she came out of it with more dignity than most, surprisingly, and I wish they had let her speak a bit more.
It felt very much like I was watching a "Brass Eye" spoof, especially when people were chanting "Gis a job innit"
