TOPIC: Wolf of Wall Street

Wolf of Wall Street 11 Years, 5 Months ago
Brilliant film; Leo deserves an Oscar; but I didn't really enjoy it. Despite some marvellous moments, it is relentless and not really on my humour spectrum. A bit like American Hustle; terribly well made on almost every level, but not for me.

Funny that I absolutely loved 6 films, one after the other, before Xmas - and even really liked Hobbit2 - but this year it's ranged from ghastly (12 Yrs; Frozen) to "good but not for me".

I love Scorsese, but as with a few other great current directors, I do wish he'd make a movie that lasted less than two hours, let alone three. There seems to have been a myth that's grown over the past thirty or so years that a great movie must last well over 120 minutes. Whereas the greats of the past had the storytelling skill and discipline to make wonderful movies within about 90 minutes. They should all have a go.

Yes it's far too long and self indulgent but a terrific film if you like that sort of thing. I simply don't; didn't much enjoy American Hustle either, though I admired both and Bale and Di Caprio will be an interesting battle.

Odd - several of the 6 films I loved were British or very British involved; Philomena, Le Weekend, Gravity, Emma Thompson in Saving Mr Banks, Sally Hawkins in Blue Jasmine... Captain Phillips is pure USA though, I suppose...

Boiler Room is a forgotten gem, based on the same person.

Some of the GOOD things about the film - Rob Reiner (wonderful; with a very funny opening scene); the "crawling out to the car" scene (hilarious).
