Can I clear something up, in my perception of the phrase 'phone hacking?'
As I understand traditional 'hacking', it is a process of technological and programming skill to gain entry to systems and data by defeating the security in place...........
'Phone hacking' as it has become known is more sinister in my view.
It involves blagging and bribery to gain the phone numbers of people you don't know and who don't want to know you and have no intention of ever wanting to know you, and then applying a very basic non technical method of assuming the role of that person and trying to access voicemail with the default code that most people don't change..........
The have eavesdropped on personal conversations and have tried to use the gained information for their 'own ends' as in selling lurid stories that would ordinarily not be public.
It is pure evil, illegal (surely) and the same as opening someone elses mail. Computer hacking is a criminal offence, the phone thing is a moral and hopefully criminal offence. It serves no purpose other than the newspapers ends for stories.
I get annoyed when its called hacking, because it clouds the issue about whatthey are actually doing, its evedropping, not a technical crime
Computer hacking isn't always technical either though, is it?
Whatever it is called, both things are a horrible invasion of privacy and cause distress.
