The Ukip leader faced questions in the European Parliament over allegations that he used his Brussels allowances to employ wife Kirsten and spin doctor Annabelle Fuller.

Mr Farage employs five “local assistants” including his German wife who earns up to £30,000.

Miss Fuller is also on his payroll, having returned to the Ukip fold after leaving in 2008.

Mr Farage was asked if his use of the allowance was good value for money.

The challenge came from MEP Nikki Sinclaire, Britain’s first transgender parliamentarian and a former Ukip member who left the party in a row with Mr Farage.

She asked him: “With unemployment still a problem across Europe and indeed across the UK, does Mr Farage think it is a fair use of taxpayers’ money, namely his secretarial allowance, not only to employ his wife Kirsten but his former mistress Annabelle Fuller?”

Mr Farage responded: “I don’t want to answer that at all.”
