I think the McDonagh brothers are quite superb - the best film makers so far this century, with In Bruges and The Guard my personal favourite movies. Calvary is a terrific film - but I didn't enjoy it as much. The balance is slightly wrong. Not enough of the dark humour. Still, it could win the Best Movie Oscar and the utterly superb Brendan Gleeson could well get the Best Actor Oscar that he SHOULD have won for The Guard.
It's the kind of film that leaves you unable to move from your seat.
A terrible disappointment... No character development beyond everyone simply being awful (including the dog who was clearly administered sleeping pills throughout, never greeted his owner with so much as a wag and deserved to be bumped off). Virtually no humour. Tired old forgiveness and redemption themes. Gleeson simply a continually worried and frowning beard with no depth or interest. Deeply dark and depressing from start to finish. Save your money and go and see the wonderful looking forthcoming, trailed Miyasaki/Studio Ghibli farewell instead!
