There are always rewards for making "false" claims, either by receiving kindly attention and sympathy, the kudos of a brush with fame,absolving yourself of blame, five minutes of fame, or compensation.
However, actually ADVERTISING for people to "come forward" with no evidence and nothing to lose takes it to another level.
