Is it just me who considers "social networks" to be ANTI social because they encourage pretending to know other people instead of really knowing other people. "Friends" become people you've never met. Bizarre.
I am not sure.
I met my closest friend on a forum we were both using seven years ago,(She lives close) and although several of these people are "real life" friends now there are some who live far away that I have never met but are every bit as dear to me as "real" friends.
I like the thought of friendships developing unhindered by social status, location and appearance.
On the other hand....
Twitter and facebook etc seem to encourage only superficial statements of a few words. It is not open to everyone, and so people seem to go a bit bonkers collecting "friends" who they are unlikely to ever make a connection with.
I am all in favour of lighthearted posts, tweets and whatever they call it on Facebook, but for many it is used as a boasting tool for their mundane lives.
I know a girl who believes she has thousands of twitter friends, bleats and repeats all day long pesters celebrities non stop, and shows photographs of her ready meals.
Her twitter is so ridiculous and eye popping it has become a bit of a cult.
I notice people are using the words "friends" and "contacts" interchangeably these days.
YUK!
I like this one
