Which is your favourite national daily newspaper? 17 Years, 6 Months ago
I have (believe it or not) many friends on the nationals - you should hear some of the tip offs I get - and there's a lot of good in many of them.
My personal faves are the Guardian/Observer (I find them better written and more intelligent). I think the best are probably the Mail titles (and they can also be the worst).
I enjoyed writing a page for The Sun every week for 10 years (which is where many friends remain) and found it wonderfully professional and efficient, but a lot of that was down to Kelvin the editor.
Which, if any, do you read? And/or like?

We have the Times Ed on a Friday, Guardian on Saturday and the Mail on Sunday, which is fun, but I think worrying if people take it seriously, personally.
I would love to get a job as the agony Aunt in it, my answer to all the relationship problems would be on the lines of.."look it doesnt work split up, you only live once..."
I also allways buy the Observer, when it has its food monthly thing.
Apart from that, I prefer news on the telly or the radio.
I don`t really like the clutter of newpapers anymore.
I grew up in a house where we had the Daily Sketch everyday, I can`t really remember it much, but I do recall Mum and Dad being a bit peeved when a copy of Mail popped through the door as a replacement.
I have a very good friend on the Mail as well, and am allways pleased to read her work, but I still laugh loudly at the day in which I was quoted on page three of an issue, about a subject that I knew as little about as anybody, with the words.."a spokesmen said....", followed by the gossip I had picked up whilst having coffee in a music shop the previous day. Luckily enough, I was actually correct.

I used to read the Guardian before it turned into the Beano.

Currently I read the Times. Politically I am in almost complete disagreement with their views but at least it's a newspaper.

It also has Simon Barnes, the greatest writer in any discipline currently writing for a broadsheet or tabloid.

Another Guardian reader here and I like the new size.

I stopped getting Saturday and Sunday papers because there is too much, especially Sunday.

As for the cascade of useless adverts that fall out of my paper, especially Sunday, I never read them but just scoop them up and bin them.

Don't read any these days. 17 Years, 6 Months ago
I attended a trial a few years ago and when the guilty verdict was announced there was a stunned silence in the public gallery which was full of the accused's supporters. The following day a newspaper printed the story of how the public gallery erupted into loud shouts of YES and people punching the air in celebration. Totally and intentionally false. It turned me off newspapers for life.

Don't bother with daily papers any more .... 17 Years, 6 Months ago
Hardly enough time to read them properly and you get faster news via the net anyway.

I still buy 2/3 papers at the weekend, though

I gave up reading the Independent because it is anything but independent (especially the Spawn of Satan, Johann Hari). The Guardian is all we have here and I'm happy to stick with it. While there are some excellent articles in many of the daily rags, I find the endless pages of xenophobia and stirring up hatred, to be somewhat shocktactics and basically vindictive.

Speaking of newspapers does anyone remember the christmas episode of the sitcom "The Good Life"?
The Goods had to make their own christmas crackers out of bits of newspaper and toilet rolls etc. Margo (Penelope Keith) was rather shocked to see the hats were made out of newspaper and when asked to put her hat on, she had unravelled the newspaper and exclaimed "this is the Daily Mirror!". To which Tom (Richard Briers) happily replied,(while handing over his hat) "Terribly sorry Margo, please, have the Telegraph!" to which she had no objection, putting it on her head and began to read her motto!

The Guardian would appear to number one! 17 Years, 6 Months ago
I actually thought it would be as well, not because it is the most popular newspaper, but because most of the posting crew appear to enjoy the same sort of comments and waxings.I have tried the Independent and even bought the first issue.
When I was touring full time, the whole band would do the Guardian crossword together in the van. Once we had one clue left to fill, which was "bunting", 7 letters. Being the only ornithologist in the Ford Transit, we had this particular one knocked of in under half an hour.
Then later in the day, we put our "loud and dim" hats on and prepared ourselves for those that liked to rock:woohoo:

I don't buy a paper and never have. I'm interested in news but not in the writers opinions, I can make up my own mind thank you very much.

I also don't give a sh1t about celebs private lives therefore a paper tends to hold little of interest for me.

Very little sensationalism, very little speculation, news stories written to present the facts and not the writers personal opinions, cartoons that make you smile rather than think "someone gets paid to draw this unfunny sh*t?" and a very witty letters page.

the only bad thing is you have to get on public transport to get a copy

I'm a Telegraph man, balanced with the Mail, but I'd be interested to know:

When they're thrust at you, do you choose the Evening Standard Lite, or TheLondonPaper?

Strangely, the Yorkshire Post. I much prefer the regional dailys/evening papers and always pick up a copy of the Standard when in London.

The Sun for me, keeps me occupied for the train journey to college everday.
Good jounalists, cartoons nearly all get politics correct, people asking for advice in their sex lives are funny and the football reports are top class.

Daily Mirror is totally funny total left wingers (hypocrites). The richard hammond special was a joke; the way they were carrying on you would have thought he was dead and more important than any one else.

I know he was injured in a crash but he survived; he is not the only person to survive a crash.

By an large, I find print media as much fun as plunging heated needles into my eyes. If I have to read something, I suppose The Guardian/Observer/The Independent are the ones I'd go for, since I object to paying someone for their opinion, and I'm not going to go out of my way to find something in the poor quality lavatory fodder that panders to my prejudices. I'm a fact junkie, so I prefer to formulate my own opinions. Thus I like Teletext news... enough text to get the facts, with restricted enough space for the reporter to be unable to have an opinion in there.

For comedy value, The Daily Nazi and The Hate Mail are great. Go through the opinion pieces replacing the object of the splenetic rant of the day with 'Black','Slav, 'Communist or 'Jew' and it's like reading Die Sturm!

Rule 1. NEVER let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Rule 2. There are no other rules.
