TOPIC: Stephen Fry on Savile

Stephen Fry on Savile 10 Years, 9 Months ago
In today's Independent.

Very strong language. The Savile revelations have certainly created an atmosphere of ultra caution at the BBC. The Stinson Hunter documentary on C4 illustrated very well, how this issue extends into all areas of our society.

Fry said the case of Savile, a man he described as "an absolutely monstrous, depraved and repulsive piece of work", had left the establishment deeply paranoid about similar figures and their historic sexual activities.

It seems yet another celeb is a believer in tabloid headlines, and not doing basic research like reading the official reports. Sort of like Gambacini.

I think the best guide to judging what people in the public eye say about this now is to set aside Jimmy Savile as someone they know they have to judge/condemn in order to get their main point across about the bigger picture. Leave the straight-talking on him to those who either aren't "public figures" or have already been damned anyway (JK, Jim Davidson etc)
There's a radio journalist who raises the subject of Yewtree with almost guest he interviews (all of which are on YouTube) and gets almost all of them to express disgust about it all & the methods used - yet he also 'sensationalises' an interview he did with Jimmy Savile. Is he doing that to allow himself the room to spread the real truth with everyone else? Is that what Stephen Fry is also doing? I know what I think.

Try this.

some pretty wacky comments from readers.

Fry is spot on yet is still making that leap of logic- that Savile is guilty of everything claimed because a 1000 newspaper reports have said so.

Yet Savile has not been investigated and never will be.

A very foolish remark from Stephen - especially as he was at the dinner two years ago when I really had a go at Gambo for spouting off about Savile. I shall find out why he said it next time we meet.

He is not a stupid man, so there is probably a good reason.

He'll probably say the opposite then. In other people it's called contrariness or muddleheadedness. In Fry, the most over-indulged and over-praised celeb in metropolitan culture, it's treated as genius.

The questions asked here now seem to be taboo.
