it was evident from the 70s that Magggies' bizarre policy of selling off housing stock at a discount- and forbidding councils to replace them- would be a disaster.

The ITKs of the world claim this gives people a chance- no it only gives some people a chance ahead of others- those that just happen to have the required funds at that stage. It is a selective form of socialism that benefits selected people and continues to benefit them at the expense of others.

Now Cameron has done likewise and instead of his promise to replace the stock he has failed to.

Essentially Margaret Thatcher created the Greatest Socialist Policy Britain has Seen worthy of the old USSR with it's endless concrete tower blocks plus the Greatest Handover of Taxpayer Funds to private hands-small "buy to let" or property developer landlords.

The problem : there is no solution : each government patches the problem with even more money in housing subsidies (reducing what each claimant gets does not solve the total bill which gets bigger every year) and passes it on to the next government whether Labour, Tory, UKIP.

Amazing, just reading the discount levels on current right to buy. Personally I am happy for the people buying the property. But here we have on one hand reduced capital coming back into local government. Then local government, presumably funded by central government, to now pay extra to house people and still talking austerity budget cuts. Not just labour looney but the conservatives. I was homeless with a family of four children, who could not get help because I was called intentionally homeless in the ealy 80's so have known since been in the UK for over thirty years how amazely stupid governments are.
My point is the goverment can properly house people any time it so chooses to do so. And still help people buy their own home. We always, in all things get faced with this idea it can be one thing or the other, but not both. Why can it not be right to buy and new supply of affordable rented council housing. What's the big deal and money wise it is cheaper. Why cannot everyone win?

Personally I like the idea of a senate so have seen one only positive policy from a party so far.

We are NOT in the business of providing FREE homes to people - they should go to work and buy their own (like we had to do).

But the government IS giving out free housing. The lack of council houses has pushed up the price of rental (and larger houses) to ludicrous heights and we are paying people to live there. Sometimes they darent even get a job because rents are too high for a normal wage. I could have been living in a swish flat in Belgravia now if only I hadn't been daft enough to fend for myself!
