Our national papers in child abuse scandal 10 Years, 8 Months ago
Virtually every front page indulges in child abuse today. Get me straight here. There is no way to justify the ghastly murder of that poor, innocent teacher. But there is also no justification for that delightful trilogy - media, police and law - to destroy another human being, let alone a child (if you accept that a 15/16 year old is a "child" - technically he's a "young person").

Find him, arrest him, try him, sentence him, jail him and attempt to sort him out, mend his head, put his soul back together again. And do it privately, humanely, kindly, gently and with decency.

Don't, as society, pander to our nasty side, desire to demonise, pleasure in ghastly details and photos and blood and knives and gore. Just because the less decent enjoy wallowing in second hand nastiness, just because it's "a good story", just because it means increased profits - don't rape a human being for the gratification of that horrible aspect of society.

Resist the temptation to make loadsamoney. Be kind for a change.

Deaf ears? Oh yes.

"Judicial error

We have spotted one error in the sentencing remarks: the judge stated that the minimum term cannot be reduced. Whilst this is the norm for adult offenders, this is not the situation for those sentenced to detention during HM’s pleasure, whose tariffs are kept under review."

As JK rightly and often hints, for the dirty dealers and brainless users of Grub Street.

"Bad News" = "Good Stories" = "Ratings & Profit".

Thus, for them all "Good News" = "NO NEWS!"

Should the Judge have allowed media to name and destroy the killer of the school teacher? He justifies his decision - not because now the media will admire him (if he thinks that he doesn't understand the media) but, he says, because it will deter future potential killers.

I disagree. I think many of these mad people have, as a prime motive, the desire for fame and notoriety. I think there will be other killings and massacres as a direct result of the judge and media's delight in promoting this teenage assassin. The only difference, I would predict, is that some future loonies will realise guns are more effective than knives and you can get more victims.

But let's not forget why the judge and media really did it.

Because it's A GREAT STORY.

In my humble view I agree with open justice, and think facts should be heard in all but the most extreme cases.
Yes the meejah will sensationalise certain things, and in the case of a teacher killed in the classroom by a young man will of course fit into that category.
Given the trust we must have between teacher/pupil to make the education system work then we do need access to the full facts,if we're to work out where this went wrong...we can't learn lessons from secrecy, and trusting government officials to handle this by themselves will just add to future problems.

So you believe, Patt, that future acts like this can be stopped by better security and regulations? I feel that you will never stop the tiny minority of mad people committing crimes. Don't waste money having inquiries and making rules and new laws. And don't persecute the criminals; try to heal them and help them. And, above all, don't pander to the lower impulses of humanity and their vicarious desire for salacious details.

it's part of the old Future Shock syndrome that a vast majority of people suffer from....the belief that one day all crime will cease, all buildings be built, all roads repaired and so and on.

Nothing gained by naming a young killer and as now demonstrated, he has been threatened in jail.

People have a right to know, and yes have a right to be protected.
I wouldn't waste money jailing him, just amputate his arms and legs, then he's no longer a threat,if his family/friends/charity want to look after him then fine,if not then he made his own bed....we could use the money wasted on incarcerating him in better ways...we could join the euro...we could support a load of illegal immigrants...we could buy Hedda champagne....ITK a new shovel for the mine....
