Bob Geldof 10 Years, 8 Months ago
I know he doesn't have supporters on this board but I would like to say I think he is an amazing ambassador for the British music industry. Watching him on BBC breakfast TV this morning you can't help but see the intelligence and ability of the man. If he had the inclination or wanted I'm sure he could have reached the top of any branch of politics or business.

If anyone or anything gets too successful it seems that is a reason to knock it down. Geldof is not perfect but he is well meaning and I believe he and the Band Aid team are managing the charity aspects of what they are doing as well as anybody could. It would be great if millions of pounds could be donated without any celebrities being involved or any media exposure but that isn't going to happen so I think Band Aid has represented the music industry very well over the last 30 years and have produced a model which others have followed. Regardless of the money they have raised the amount of awareness of the problems as a result of their efforts has been immense. I can't understand why anyone criticises Bob Geldof for having an ego. He is the spokesperson and as such needs to have confidence and swagger to do that job. This morning on the BBC his performance was faultless and I think he could have answered any question put to him and won any debate any detractor wanted too have with him. It was a performance but anyone who appears on the media knows every word will be scrutinised so the pressure must be enormous and its why so many politician's come across as plastic. Bob Geldof can never be considered plastic. There is a lot of talk these days about role models and IMHO Bob Geldof is a great role model for any aspiring rock star. Yes he has faults but he also has many virtues. God Bless Bob Geldof

I've got nothing against Bob. I wish he WAS in the music industry. We need energetic figures like him to improve matters.

I do like his new look; he clearly interrupted rehearsals as Grandmother in Little Red Riding Hood to attend the session.

Agree

One Million Pounds raised (in the first five minutes) shows that the public support Geldof (and anything that stops the here-today-gone-tomorrow X Factor "winner" getting the Christmas No 1 is just a big fat bonus !)

And the fact that the website broke down after 5 minutes sums it all up perfectly. Good intentions on the road to chaos.

a "role model for aspiring pop stars"

those words again : role model.

he's still a pontificating prick but even they do some good things sometimes.

However he can never change his vicious and nasty treatment to Kel Hutchence, Michael Hutchence's father who Geldorf deliberately prevented from seeing his grand-daughter even in his last year when Kel was told he had months to live.

Kel adored Michael and visa versa, was a cultured & kind man who just wanted contact with Michael's daughter.

It reeks of a control freak. Will end badly for all.

Good for him. If enough money is raised to help the people suffering and perhaps stop it spreading ,what is the harm?
Better to do your best and make mistakes than sit and do nothing.

No it doesn't.

- Websites are designed to take normal traffic and not the sudden surge if there is exceptional demand the minutes after a song goes on sale. If more money was spent to cope with these first 10 minutes then the same people complaining would complain too much money was spent on admin and not enough on the charity.
- It is "a good story" to publish the fact a website breaks down because of demand. This is one occasion when a possible negative is actually welcomed both by the media and the subject of the story.

It's lucky you have nothing against Bob or else there would be even more negative observations.
