I really despair at the widespread failure to understand what public service broadcasting, and the BBC in particular, actually stands for. Edmonds wants to make the BBC a better business - well go off and buy Channel 5 if that's your ambition - and politicians and 'experts' want to make it a subscription channel. Unbelievable. The BBC was set up expressly to counteract the cultural inequalities sustained by class and the market. It was inspired by the liberal belief that everyone, regardless of background or schooling, should be encouraged to sample and explore the broadest range of culture possible. That's why the agricultural term 'broad cast' was adopted. You're casting cultural seed as widely as you can. So if you restrict it to subscriptions, you're blatantly contradicting that commitment. Only those ALREADY predisposed to what it offers will subscribe. After that there is NO public service broadcasting. There is only elite broadcasting. It really shouldn't be that hard to understand!

zilch interest in Noel Edmonds. just a lightweight but good on him if he can make lots of money from it.

The BBC has become tragic and may grow a spine yet but his criticisms are all wrong.

wonder where he would find a few billion pounds?
