TOPIC: Russell Brand on house prices
#124559
comrade hedda

Russell Brand on house prices 10 Years, 7 Months ago
amusing exchange with a ghastly TV reporter ignoring the bigger story with his sweeping claim that it's actually Russell who has caused the housing price problem

Comrade Hedda's solution :
immediately stop all housing benefits
A ten year ban on increasing rents
All private rents to be reduced by 25% for 10 years
The £21 BILLION paid out EVERY YEAR to private landlords to be put into building social housing

# Comrade ITK will surely join me in this crusade as he abhors all state handouts

## Comrade Hedda will be shot at dawn and has a final request- one vintage bottle of fine French chanpagne so he can die with a glass in his hand.

VIVA Le revolution!!

Bit simplistic Hedda, and one that ignores the way benefits are paid in the UK...possibly the the Venerable Hedda is far too clever to have ever been unemployed?

Getting out of the EU would mean we would have less immigrants,so less demands on housing...so less costs etc...

There's more, but as Belgium was 3 degs today I'm warming up my tootsies...and too lazy to write!

not as simplistic as selling off your assets at a knock-down price on the mad claim it will get you on "the housing ladder first rung" and then not replacing that stock.

the immediate effect would be to actually stall the most overblown and non productive aspect of rampant capitalism ( but one that is propped up by socialism)- property speculation - an artificial wealth creator which is an illusion.

the other effect is that rents would in reality halve making them affordable for the unemployed, NHS nurses( my friend who gets a rent subsidy as her wage cannot pay her rent in rural UK) and so on.

Plus the immediate injection of £21B into building would boost the economy and it would boom for the few years.

property speculation is a scourge that eventually must bust but one built on taxpayer funds is sheer lunacy which is why Comrade ITK will be joining me in this blessed crusade.

Council house sell-offs peaked years ago,and in reality did some good, and some bad,did seem a good idea when ye looked at those monstrous estates that at times became 'no-go'areas.

Did you notice Georgie Porgie has gone bust?...But did manage to reduce the stamp duty?...Another mad housing bubble on the way?

At this rate Cairns may not seem the bad idea it sounded like in the beginning!...

no the sell off council housing did no bloody good at all.

what you mean is a handful of people benefited to the detriment of 100,000s.

it was social engineering by a determined woman who had no idea what she was doing except a fixed belief that she knew better.

the centre of London had a huge social housing stock from Mayfair to Kensington , Chelsea , Westminster etc etc. Places like the "infamous" Dolphin Square which was run by a housing association up to the 90s.

Most of it gone : that is the deliberate moving of "working class" people to the outskirts with all the problems that comes with ghettos and of course - that £21B ridiculous bill every year that channels taxpayer funds into private hands.

By contrast New York State has religiously maintained it's social housing so that 10,000s of people still live in rent controlled apartments on 5th Avenue or Greenwich Village or Uptown amongst mega millionaires. There is more council housing in NY than there has ever been in London.

New York various governors have all accepted that a liveable city must have a huge mix of people of all economic levels and it's why New York is still the most exciting city int he world.

## The USA spends less than the UK on subsidised rents but builds more social housing in 5 years than the UK has built in 20.

### Maggie was possibly mad but Blair is most certainly and has been far more vicious than Thatcher.
