Ridiculously high taxes on alcohol/tobacco etc...Counter productive as it fuels smuggling, meaning the Belgium/French governments gets the lolly,we get closed pubs!
A few 'bevvies' in the local used to be the norm, now it's sit at home in front of the box, with cans and a kebab!...
...and where is ITK?

A pub company that has totally bucked the trend is Wetherspoons - who have built up a chain of about 930 pubs in only 35 years.
Opening at 8am and closing late, they sell food up to 11pm - and are immediately busy because of their excellent breakfasts.
Where I live, they are trading for three hours before any of the other 11 pubs have opened their doors.
With a £1.3 billion turnover, they have a hefty buying power - the benefits of which are passed on to the customer through lower prices.
Now beginning to open units in the Republic of Ireland (which exported the 'Irish Pub' worldwide), they are very innovative - often converting former banks, churches, cinemas and theatres.
One has to wonder why the declining British pub industry has not attempted to replicate this simple and successful formula - and are closing down instead.

Never catch me in Weatherspoons Mr Badger
Actually very simplified argument, but of course one with a lot of sense.
Weatherspoons is a mix of cafe, restaurant and pub...all in one...and they have the buying power to make it work.
The big former breweries do their own thing, mainly food based, like Toby/Hungry horse/Harvester etc...they seem to work in their own way...the ones struggling are the smaller independent places, and they could work if taxes were lowered, regulations lightened...and of course handing back choice to the customer on smoking...taken away by Tony Blair no less!

I suppose my humour..or spelling do not go down so well with Badgers
Not a big fan of Africa, and I'm comfy in bed in this bad weather...an employee is on her way to Dubai as we speak...the seat belt sign will be going off on her Gulf Air flight as we speak....
....will ye stick to this name...or will we be enthralled waiting for the next exciting instalment?
You're cordially invited to partake of a 49p coffee with Andrew and myself any time you're passing.
