Does the rather nasty, sour start to this year indicate anything? I think it does. Slowly over the past 15 years, society in Britain and I fear the world has nudged in the subtle direction of Not In My Backyard, kill people who don't agree with you, never see ramifications. It really came home to me when the EBOLA crisis provoked very little action from the North/West until it affected white people. I'd witnessed a similar lack of interest in the human condition when the Tutsi/Hutu Burundi massacre emerged in the 90s. The most appalling human tragedy got very little concern from media in the UK or USA. Indicating way back then that we were forgetting that we belong to the human species and that we should be looking after our race, not concentrating on individual issues.

The Paris madness is just a further example; more and more that small minority of loonies are getting bolder and finding that the internet gives them an audience and the traditional media cannot resist a good story, the best of which is killing people. If the brave people SAVING lives in the Ebola area got half as much publicity as the crazies killing Parisians or urging revenge against footballers, we'd all be better off. But sadly that's never going to happen.

The message seems to be - be nasty, report nasty, read nasty, condemn nasty, scream nasty but don't even notice nice.
