TOPIC: ISIS is cleverer than us.

ISIS is cleverer than us. 10 Years, 5 Months ago
They are well aware that the media cannot resist a good story so, instead of just killing people, they behead them or burn them alive and film it, knowing the stupid irresponsible media will carry it or at least describe it and that we stupid punters will howl with rage. Huge publicity for the cause!

the Mail almost act as their UK PR rep.

I don't want to see these pix even the censored ones.

publishing them encourages them.

I agree, Hedda. I like to think that by not looking at the material I am protesting against it.

Surely the Americans or Jordanians will soon release footage of exploding buildings and successful bombings with announcements that 27 ISIS soldiers have been killed, with gruesome You Tube videos featuring lots of blood and tea cloths. WAR these days need not be true as long as it's media spectacular. Please, leaders, remember George Orwell.

I don't agree with the way they're covering it either. CNN International seems to refer to the video so often, they might as well have shown it. It's almost as if they have them calling the shots in the news room. The other day, one of the newsreaders, a young woman, doing a report about ISIS and interviewing someone about it, mentioned that she had watched the video. She did indicate that it was gruesome, one of the worst things she had seen, or words to that effect, but she looked the same as usual. No difference. Immaculately presented and her normal chirpy self. It looked as if she must have fitted it in between lunch and the afternoon coffee break. I can see why they might feel a need to watch it for professional reasons, but there seemed absolutely no need for her to mention that she'd seen it and certainly not without giving the reason why. Presumably she could have chosen not to watch it and CNN wouldn't have sacked her for insubordination. It was almost as if she was showing that it was normal.

Looking at the footage of the king and queen of Jordan, the king embracing the bereaved father, and the queen walking grim-faced in the crowd, you could tell from their faces that they had most likely seen it. They might have had good reason, in solidarity with the family and the nation, but you could understand how, after seeing it, even not living in a culture where revenge is expected as the only right reaction, it would be very difficult if not impossible not to react hard and thus play right into their hands. It's almost like computer trolls taken to extreme, goading for a reaction, and I wonder if trolling culture even has something to do with helping it along.

There seems to be a casual brutality and sadism in everyday places on the internet that is quite shocking and cannot be healthy in terms of how people ultimately view dignity and the value of life. You have to wonder how many people have viewed that video just out of idle curiosity while snacking on a biscuit. Lots of small wins for them. While visiting a FB page about a completely unrelated issue a few months ago, I clicked out of curiosity on the profile of someone who had posted a comment. A middle aged woman, looked perfectly normal, with the usual kind of stuff on her page, general chitchat, photos, comments from friends, fluffy kittens, then BAM a set of photos of one of the beheading victims, including end result. Accompanied by the comment "Yuck". So what was the point of that? Why did she look at it? Why bother posting it? Why that comment? If it had been her relative, would she have been happy with that? Then the other day, another woman had chosen not just to post the usual everyday stuff but also a small photo from some kind of petition site. I couldn't quite make out what it was, then it came into focus. A gruesome animal cruelty image of the act in progress. The decision to include it on her page seemed gratuitous. I wish I had not seen either image and hope that these latest video images do not pop up somewhere else unexpectedly.

I think you're right, Jonathan, about Twitter being the work of the devil, and I think the same could be said about other forms of social media, depending on how people choose to use them and choose not to use them.
