one way to stop false accusations 10 Years, 5 Months ago
the current (conservative) NSW government has put a 10 year limit on compensation claims (or 10 years from age 18)in respect of sex assault.

Hyperventilation and howls of anguish from "survivor campaigners" who say how can justice be done?

they still get charged and can go to jail but how easy their Freudian Slips come.."show me the money" !!

as for JK's legendary Karma...an acquaintance who admitted to me he falsely claimed a catholic priest abused him..justifying it on the basis the priest was going to jail on other charges so he may as well cash in..got $75K I hear from the church.

Spent it all setting up a cafe in Kings Cross with his Indian boyfriend and went broke within 18 months.

Last I heard he loaded a car up with cans of petrol and drove at a 100 miles into a tree.

Odd.. discussing it with mutual friends they say the 'abuse' got to him eventually. But when I say you told me that he told you as he did me , that it never happened they look blank.

people re-write history at an alarming rate

Yes Hedda, the whole point of the allegations going to court is to prove innocence or guilt, if guilty is the verdict the victim has the satisfaction of knowing that person is now getting the punishment they deserve and its not about the money money money.
If I were a victim of a crime I want justice not a bloody reward.

That's very interesting, hedda. I've just been reading a book about mob behaviour which refers to the Stanford Prison experiments and Abu Ghraib. It says these situations showed that if people feel authorised to abuse others with impunity, many people will do it and with enthusiasm. I wonder if that could tie in with people feeling authorised to join a false abuse bandwagon and/or the apparent role of Twitter in stoking outrage at alleged abusers. It might also feel legitimate to make a false claim if someone told you that by speaking out you'd be helping other victims. So you could simultaneously prove you're a victim by speaking out while giving yourself a chance to cash in massively and, last and above all least, helping others. What's not to like?

I'm not convinced that financial greed is as big a motive as some believe. I think a desire to become a victim and to get sympathy is a greater reason and I also think the power of the media has a huge part. Not just in persuading people that fantasy is fact but also in putting pressure on police and CPS - much of the time, obvious liars, time wasters and trolls get taken seriously because the media has told the authorities they HAVE to be believed. Where a good cop, 15 years ago, would have rejected most claims without a second's thought, these days they cannot afford to.

I think people are sometimes glad to have the "victim" label because it removes responsibility for the way their life has turned out and they are seen as a brave hero rather than a loser.
It is probably a little bit of all the reasons. It is very easy to fake a claim, and an awful lot of people think it is acceptable. (ask anyone in insurance)
If they are actually ADVERTISING for people to come and get free money and a whiff of fame it is not surprising that some will jump at the chance.
Unfortunately, every false claim makes it less likely that a victim will be believed.
