TOPIC: The mighty Joe Meek

The mighty Joe Meek 10 Years, 5 Months ago
Telstar was on BBC2 last night. I didn't like the film. Caricatures. Joe Meek was an extraordinary talent; our greatest British record producer (though dear Clem Cattini, over lunch a few years ago, gave that plaudit to me). Of course, Joe was also (we assume) a murderer - though he's never described by the media as Murderer Joe Meek. Like Phil Spector (another music genius), he is correctly described as a Record Producer, and frequently has his music played and praised on radio and TV.

I suppose that it simply reflects the Good Story (although surely Murder is as good a story as a Vile Pervert?).

I was very disappointed with Telstar, acting was also very over acted.

Films and TV seem incapable of painting complex characters or situations these days. I loathed that Ship That Rocked film - pirate radio was so extraordinary, important, varied, funny, tragic and fascinating. It deserves an in depth movie. Likewise Joe Meek who deserves a far more detailed examination of his life and talent. An incredible complicated and deep story. I fear our species simply cannot cope with real tales anymore. Which is why Wolf Hall is so good. Rylance is fantastic but read the book.
