As MWT is in with the Mirror I think you will find him being the link between the police and Mirror being tipped off and running the story.
I really do not think the police want to be seen to be letting this out to early as it comes back and bites if an innocent person is outted as a perv when they aint so give it to the crusader.

It looks like a deliberate attempt to drop hints about the kind of crimes he could be accused of, clearly unnecessary to anyone who is a genuine victim of crime.
