The truly fascinating story about Notre Dame de Reims is that the original wooden cathedral was burnt to the ground in 1211.
Stonemasons, sculptors, glaziers indeed every type of artisan then travelled from all over Europe to build an even greater cathedral, which of course is the one standing today. The point being that no-one knows who built it .The names of all those artisans were not recorded and their work therefore remains anonymous.

I spent two hours entranced (photos will be uploaded when I get a moment).

Saw Joan of Arc (well, her statue).

Loved the calm atmosphere.

It was I believe William 1 (the Conqueror) - commonly know as William The Bastard in France ! - he died in 1087 at The Priory of St. Gervais, Rouen
