Well I've now seen The Queen too... 18 Years, 3 Months ago
at the Gate (a big movie magazine did a piece recently on it being my favourite cinema)... just too far to walk but not enough for me not to feel guilty for taking a taxi... I enjoyed it... "pretty good" would be my review.
I didn't like it at all for the first 45 minutes (Diana and her death rather annoyed me at the time, proving that a good story is more important than reality, a trend that has since gone out of control but in 1997 was only just starting) but it grew on me. It became more subtle and more clever.
Blair was given some very good lines and Mirren was excellent as The Queen.
But, for me, it was a very well observed caricature rather than a great acting invention.
Dench was given one of the best literary inventions in Notes On A Scandal and made the most of it. For me, she is streets ahead of Mirren in the race for Best Actress Oscar, although the voters may be swayed by the role of Her Majesty.

Our nipper found a site , can you believe, where you can watch The Queen and other brand new films online for nothing. I had a quick look, and noticed that peoples shadows kept walking accross the screen which amused me greatly!
The site has now notably been taken down, and quite rightly too.
Who wants another side of the industry walloped?
