The recent scandals coming up in that small country are almost too numerous to mention - and awful policing is just the latest example. And when an internal 'whistle-blower' (in the police) attempted to tell the truth - he was pilloried.

Paedophile clergy didn't exist - it was aledged for years. Again, the truth came out and numerous priests have been jailed. Because the deniers (Bishops included) had no choice but to come clean. Millions has been paid in compensation.

Bankruptcy of the country was only avoided by an EU bailout - and virtually all banks were taken over by the government after the 2008 crash. Many bankers are in prison and/or face trial. And politicians- at the highest level - have been shown/proven/convicted as corrupt, taking bribes for planning permissions etc.

Consequently, severe austerity measures were required - with the result that healthcare, transport, public services are very low quality. In addition, there are serious drug problems in the larger cities - and immigration from Eastern Europe continues, almost unchecked.

^ Spee, you are completely orrect, unfortunately.

In fact, drugs of all types are available in not only large Irish cities but in country villages and small towns.

Lawlor wasn't even on the iceberg.

Charles Haughey (d 2006) ran the country for years, as Prime Minister.

Fooled everybody (or the electorate, media and establishment ignored his corruption) and ran the Republic of Ireland for his personal gain.

Had a massive estate north of Dublin, a yacht, private island off the SW coast - and an opulent lifestyle.

Which could not be supported by a PM'S salary.

It came to light that he was the recipient of numerous bribes from property developers and the like - for a variety of favours, often planning related.

Called The Boss - his whole story beggars belief.

Sadly for Ireland, he wasn't alone...
