Police Assault on Black Woman 17 Years, 1 Month ago
I'm sure you've all seen the shocking footage by now - many (esp those trying to defend the policeman) say that you cannot make out where the blows are being aimed.

I think you can. If you watch the footage immediately before the assault it's clear that the woman's head is to the left and her feet to the right. At no time does she appear to "turn round".

The policeman is towards the left side (ie near the head) and reigning blows directly down - not to the other end of the body.

The fact that the police seem quite proud of the fact that they used "brute force" may indicate a new tactic on their part? Instead of trying to defend themselves, they go on the offensive? A kind of blase "so what" attitude - similar to that adopted by the Yankers?

I saw the footage on Newsnight last night. On first viewing, have to admit I found the images to be extremely disturbing.

Having said that, I think this is a million-miles away from the infamous Rodney King video, where you could clearly see a group of LAPD Thugs beating the crap out of this poor guy (for what I seem to remember was some kind of traffic violation!)...

What we didn't see last night were the events leading up to the beating, and of course, we couldn't see where the blows were actually landing.

I think that is the key to the whole debate about whether 'reasonable force' was in fact used.

The statement from the accused officer struck me as honest and forthright. It sounded like it came from a guy who had nothing to hide.

Personally, I think he hit her arm. If that is the case, then I'd say it's reasonable force.

From the pictures, she was clearly in a violent and agressive state of mind. In fact, the police had only been called because she was smashing up someone's car after being chucked out of the club.

I'd wager that none of those blows hit her in the face. If he had, then surely there would be evidence to support this (such as doctor's pics etc). Also, I'm not sure if the other officers present would have just stood-by if he'd been hitting her in the face...

The ex-police chappy on Newsnight gave a very calm assessment of what needs to be done in terms of investigating this incident. I must admit that before the interview, I thought this guy was going to damn the police to hell after what they'd done to him.

I'm no fan of the police, and it's a given that there are some very nasty indivduals amongst their ranks.

At the same time, I am sure there are some incredibly decent people in the Force, doing an increasingly difficult job under trying conditions.

Ask yourself, what would you have done in this officer's position?

You forgot to mention that she was an epileptic !

This incident happened LAST JULY - and the footage was only released last night (a bit late for a doctor's report, maybe?)

Oooh, Cilla .... I think you've been out in the sun too long! (I said when you moved to AZ that associating with those Yankers would have a detrimental effect!).

I still think it would be highly dangerous to allow them to get away with this - if police think they can use this amount of force then it'll become the norm.

Although I don't coincide with Cilla entirely, I too did wonder about the relevance of the woman's ancestry.

But that's exactly what she WAS doing ! The fact that the police misinterpreted this is hardly her fault !

<<< you have no idea what cops go thorugh from assult to acid thrown at >>>

Let's look at the facts - she was assaulted by FOUR policemen, whilest a savage threatening dog was being almost used as a weapon against her (with the clear intent that it would be set upon her).

Finally, she is dragged away with her trousers round her ankles in a disturbing, degrading and humiliating way.

The policeman reigning the blows did so in fairly quick succession - not waiting to see whether each had subdued her. It's quite realistic to call that a frenzied assault.

Zooloo - That's quite a racist remark, and I think reasonable people will see it as so. (A Tory Minister was sacked today for saying something similar).

The police have an arsenal of weapons - inc CS gas ! batons, and Tazar Guns - and usually attack in groups. We've all seen in the last few months that they are quite prepared to shoot - and kill - innocent people. At that moment they are both judge and jury - without proper checks being maintained it will be Nazi Germany within months.

You get the society that you are prepared to put-up with

the fact that she wore her trousers round the bottom of her arse is her fault,of course they fell down.chav fashion remember.I know I make light of this story but lets not forget why this came about, its a chav scum smashing up someones car because she couldn't get in a club.if she wasn't a fuckwit the cops wouldn't have bothered her.now throw her in a bath of acid and be done with her.ahh 93f/34c,my brain is frying.

I think the thing that has struck me about this case takes us all into a different sinister area.

There is a camera everywhere and I for one do not like it a bit.

Whilst I realise these cameras are here for "our security" and hopefully they are working, you only have to get a situation like that which happened to the Brazilian man last year to show not only it`s big brotherness, but it`s fallibilty.

Re; epilepsy, I used to work with a very tall friend who was epileptic and there were days in which it was like working with a time bomb.
A terrible affliction indeed.

Exactly, Mart.

The policeman said (his words) that he used "brute force" and "hit her as hard as he could" (continually).

If we accept this - then this will become the "norm" for the police. They will automatically assume that they can use "brute force" and hit people "as hard as they can" whenever they like.

and all of you in favour had better NOT complain when it happens to you !

Well said Cilla, of course ITK doesn't have a clue.

What would you do if you your car was vandalised and sign thown at you? just take it? of course not - you take drastic action, like the cop did. good on you mate.

I want the cop back on front line duty, we need more cops like him.

The Court dealt with the woman's offence - and considered it SO SERIOUS that she was given a conditional discharge !!!!

Imagine if she had done something REALLY serious - like parking on a double yellow line! - the police would have killed her.

The motto of your post seems to be "bring as much violence as possible to the streets". Cilla really should know better - this approach has lead to the USA being the most violent place on Earth (with around 20,000 murders a year).

Still, you can't educate thickies, can you?

That is an unreasonable and unreasoned opinion. Frankly it falls below the standards I expect on this forum.

Godwin's law
