RIP Rodney Bewes aged 79 6 Years, 5 Months ago
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-42067506

Very sad to hear of the death of the star of "The Likely Lads", probably one of the best sitcoms of all-time. There aren't many left from those classic 70s sitcoms now.

Also sad to hear that he fell out with his much more successfully co-star decades ago, which made another series of Likely Lads impossible.

It was his co-star James Bolam who was the bitter one apparently. Bewes revealed that Bolam's wife was pregnant on a chat show, and Bolam who guarded his privacy very tightly blew up and never spoke to him again. Talk about over-reacting.

What did he say to Mr King ?

Felt sorry for Bewes wrote a book that flopped, blocked repeat fees and was always paying out vet bills by George Harrison barb wire fence.

Not forgetting his one man shows in tiny theatres.

I'd have done the same if it was something that kept happening.

I was a big fan of Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads. Both Bob and Terry were a major influence in my early teenage life.

The last thing I saw Rodney Bewes in was Doctor Who, year ago.

A friend, when he learned that Rodney had died, wrote this on his Facebook page.
"a lovely, warm man who spoke fondly of his Likely Lad days and about his love of Phil Silvers/Sgt.Bilko."

He seemed a nice guy to me, but I know he could rub up some the wrong way, usually without even knowing it. The thing was, he was an 'ACTOR' - loved talking about his career, increasingly implausible and unreliable theatrical stories, visits to the Garrick, etc - some found it entertaining, others found it boring. Bolam on the other hand is someone who does his work and goes home, shuts the door and expects to be left alone. So they were never kindred spirits - but I believe they got on pretty well until the start of that rift. I find it sad that Bolam now claims he only has fond memories of Bewes - what a pity he never let him know.

Rodney pleaded with Bolam before he died but he got nothing back. So sad.
Unfortunately some people are like that. People fall out over the slightest thing
and very often the other turns out to be stubborn and doesn't want to makeup.

Nothing stopped James from doing a short interview about the much loved sitcom...just his ego.

Can't understand why he didn't get much TV work.

And he apologised the next day but James hanged up on him.

Whats the big deal about people knowing that his wife was pregnant, they are going to find out pretty soon anyway when she puts on several stone.

If he had been asked to not discuss James Bolam's private life he should have kept his gob shut.
Pregnancy is a private matter and most people wait until the first trimester is safely over before telling a wider circle.

Interestingly James Bolam has denied there was a fued, he said he has nothing but "fond memories"

The Guardian interview rings very true to me; the media always, always, always exaggerates every story to make it a better read or view or listen. Bolam talks sense. People do drift apart and they do have mini rows and disagreements, like we all do. And the "better story" always inflates it - after all, it gets more inches and entertainers are dead keen on inches. It's only disturbing when it becomes accepted by law as fact where it rarely was and is submitted as evidence when it wasn't. That is where we have slid down the slippery slope.

Blocked repeats so stopped him getting repeat fees.

James Bolam missus sounds like a piece of work buy not getting involved with her since she gave away at birth.

As you know Andrew I tend not to swallow everything fed to me by the media. At worst - invented. At best - exaggerated.

But it WASN'T the media that spread this "fake news" - it was one of the regulars on here !
