Newsnight predicts Labour Wipe-Out ! 18 Years ago
According to research by BBC's Newnight, the Labour Party is heading for the biggest defeat in electoral history !

They predict the popular vote at next week's local elections, and elections for the Scottish and Welsh Assemblies will be - Tories 38% / Lib Dems 29% / Labour 24%.

That would a lower result for Labour that John Major achieved at his low point (25%) and a whopping 5% lower than Michael Foot's humiliating Labour low point.

As this is one of the biggest electoral tests before the General Election (over 90% of the UK will be eligible to vote) it's the best test yet for the next election result.

That would translate as a Tory victory, with a small majority. The Lib Dems would be running Scotland (with the SNP) and also Wales (with the Welsh Nationalists ?)

This would be much healthier for democracy - as parties would have to work together a little more - and the days of the dictatorship under Blair's huge majority would be history.

MPs would have to LISTEN for a change !

Well, obviously the Labour Party watch Newsnight - judging by the frenzied activity today.

"Downing Street denies Blair will quit next Tuesday" (May 1st) - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6599619.stm

No, it's the following Tuesday (May 8th) !

A last minute cynical attempt to "save" Labour from electoral wipe-out will not work twice !

He only got elected last time because he had promised - in advance - never to stand again. He only made that promise because Labour's electoral returns were telling him that Iraq was a huge problerm for them on the doorstep !
