It's hard to think of anyone other than Boris for the next PM unless some unknown springs up from the backbenches at the 11th hour as Jeremy Corbyn did, on the opposite side, a few years ago. I don't think Boris will last long however, mainly due to his girlfriend's makeover. His old hairstyle means alot to the world peace movement. Just think what a triumvirate of leaders (Boris, Trump and Kim Jong-un of North Korea) with funny hairdos could achieve, possibly creating so much mirth and laughter around the world that all the current tensions and aggressive feelings (often a forerunner of war and unnecessary suffering) would dissolve instantly. Everyone could then concentrate on the really important matters such as how best to care for one another.

One interesting candidate, I think, is Rory Stewart. Given that he has only just entered the cabinet, maybe just indicating an interest this time around rather than having any real chance, but perhaps future PM material? He has a very interesting biography and seems to me to be quite a cerebral and courageous character, almost like someone from a previous age. His book "The Places in Between" about his solo walk across Afghanistan is a good read.

Sorry, hedda, didn't mean to ignore your post, was just picking up on md's point about Boris looking to be the only real candidate. I agree that he's unfortunately likely to be PM and doubt that his principles will stand in the way of doing a deal with the Murdochs. Depressing that the country is likely to get such an unprincipled leader, but things seem to be in a bad way at the moment.

Another Oxbridge/Etonian who started his working career at the Foreign Office. Sound familiar?

Well connected - son of a diplomat, RS used to a tutor to the princes, Harry and William.

Undoubtedly bright, but isn't it time fo break the mould at last - from the perennial Cameron Johnson types?
