Rolf Harris in the news again 6 Years, 2 Months ago
The Mirror and Daily Mail have picked up on an article in Australia's Herald Sun (behind a paywall).

Rolf Harris 'abandons hopes of clearing his name over child sex convictions'

Australian TV star's fall from grace: Paedophile Rolf Harris, 89, lives as a recluse in a $9MILLION mansion looking after his dying wife – and only leaves to buy his diabetes medication

Not sure how reliable a newspaper the Herald Sun is. Wikipedia indicates that it's in the Murdoch stable.

A disgusting way to treat anyone; the media should be ashamed of itself (social media too; it reflects a nasty side of humanity - not large; indeed a tiny minority in my experience, but this Internet thing has given voice to it; used to be over the garden wall - now it has a platform).

Just a small correction....but all diabetic medicines are free...and why in and what type of dollars are we using in a UK publication?

Didn't papers used to employ their own journalists?...who actually investigated their own stories?

It's the small things that we must get right, then the bigger picture will be clear...I do dislike people playing around with the facts, just to make them fit with their own world view...not that anybody will have noticed....

The assaults include one on an eight-year-old autograph hunter, two on girls in their early teens, and a catalogue of abuse against his daughter's friend of over 16 years.

However, he was released on parole in May 2017 after serving just three years in jail.

Of the 12 convictions, one was overturned on appeal in November 2017, and a jury chose not to convict him in two additional cases in the same year.

This makes me so angry. They mention the eight-year-old autograph hunter - pushing the myth that he attacked children - but don't mention that the conviction that was overturned related to this one. It just wouldn't do for Daily Mail readers to be aware that Rolf Harris has no convictions whatsoever for assaulting pre-pubescent children. There would be a national surplus of secondhand pitchforks.

As for the jury 'choosing' not to convict him at the two subsequent trials, the phrase they are looking for is NOT GUILTY - the official verdict after two juries failed to reach a conclusion.

Perhaps even the Daily Mail's readers are tiring of the nastiness. Only four comments in reply to the article (which is from Daily Mail Australia, which presumably explains the figure in dollars) and three are saying he should be left in peace. It is pretty despicable that they should be still labelling him a paedophile, and not mentioning which conviction was overturned on appeal, but the truth doesn't seem to be a high priority for them.

Indeed, Jo - as far as the tabloids are concerned, Rolf Harris's (questionable) convictions are the gift that keeps on giving.

I suspect that the Mail is holding back the tidal wave of comments as there are too many supporting him these days. I've noticed that if they have an agenda they will allow only those comments that fit the mould of that particular agenda. Try getting a comment on there about the overturning of the conviction relating to his 'youngest victim'! And while the usual suspects are quick to point out that with one conviction quashed there are still 11 remaining, they fail to appreciate that the quashed one probably did him more damage than most of the others collectively in view of her age.

The Mirror and the Sun aren't accepting comments at all. I wonder why?
