The personal history of David Copperfield 4 Years, 6 Months ago
I must admit to being a huge fan of Armando Iannucci - his Death of Stalin should have won many awards; and I adore Charles Dickens, so I approached this film with hope but trepidation. I need not have worried. Though very loosely based indeed on the novel, it absolutely captures the spirit and soul of Dickens (for me the greatest ever Englishman). It is new tech Charles for the 21st Century. It's not officially on release until next year (I went to a packed special screening) but it is an absolute delight, bravely daring to avoid many of the obvious ("Barkis is willin", the famous Micawber lines, much of the tragedy) but keeping the wonderful humour and amazing invention of our finest ever novelist.

I was torn between Copperfield and Joker last weekend so this time I'll go to Joker which, I suspect, mirrors the state of humanity today when decency has been replaced by selfishness and greed has taken over from charity.
