Agreements are now being sought by many countries - not least by the UK, after Brexit. Including deals with the EU - with which about half out trade is transacted.
Deals agree preferential terms, tax arrangements, tariffs etc. - for specific goods - and can seriously improve trading levels, whilst reducing red tape and customs procedures.
Canada already has them with both the US and EU - whilst we now only have two - agreed in principle - with South Africa and Mozambique. Previously we were involved in forty, as EU members.
Only time will tell how successful we'll be - in the light of our declining manufacturing base. But the electorate - through their choices - have shown great confidence in our ability to barter well!
