Eugenio Pacelli 5 Years, 5 Months ago
Better known as Pope Pius XII - who was in the Vatican for 20 years, from the beginning of WW2.

This week, for the first time, large archives are being opened to the public. Thousands of documents are involved.

Relating to EP's time in office - and his relationship/dealings with Hitler, during the war.

As Pope - EP never denounced Hitler for his persecution and genocide of Jews, either publicly or privately.

Soon the reasons will become clear - after academics initially are given access to documents - never seen before, by those outside Vatican City.

It seems that EP's few negative observations on Hitler - and the Nazis - were made only after he had lost the war.

Many conspiracy theories exist - and, no doubt, Netflix/Hollywood will have an input when the outcome of the investigations are published.

Francis - again - is showing an openness, never thought possible, in what was one of the most secretive and powerful religions in the world.

It's noteworthy that the canonisation/sainthood procedure has been put on hold - temporarily at least, for this Pope.

Many Jews found it unconscionable, in the light of his inaction during WW2.

Bearing in mind that he (a German speaker) had been working in Germany during the rise of Hitler there, during the 30s.

So many documents exist - it'll take years to unravel the full story; perhaps 20.

Maybe 5 before we have any idea of the scope and consequences of the findings. Is it a can of worms?
