What I keep wondering is whether it ever crosses these lawyers' minds that some of their clients might not be telling the truth. Like police they must develop a sense of who's telling the truth and who isn't.

Part of a lawyer's training is to argue/advocate from any position regardless of their own opinions or beliefs. Their opinions are irrelevant to the process, and have to be. But I'm sure they get pretty good at smelling BS...
