Prince Harry says the Commonwealth needs to ‘acknowledge its past’ 5 Years, 1 Month ago
If the slave trade is going to be discussed with a view to compensation, I think other 19th century historical episodes involving hardship and brutality should also be considered. This would include the Great Hunger of Ireland; the Scottish Highland clearances; child labour in the fields, mines and factories; males who were kidnapped for army and navy service; those who were imprisoned for long lengths of time in atrocious conditions on the prison ships stationed at Portsmouth, the Bahamas and Gibraltar. I wonder how many wrongful imprisonments took place in those days?

I think this is a pre-emptive strike as The Royals realise the woke generation will come for it soon....

How would they decide who gets compensation? I suppose Caribbean islands like Jamaica could argue that most of their population was descended from slaves, and that they're entitled to compensation as a nation, but it would surely be difficult for individuals to prove entitlement. And if righting the wrongs of the past through compensation were to be extended to other issues, where would it end?

Wyot, doesn’t it depend on which stories the media chooses to publish and keep running and which ones to keep hidden or suppressed?

Jo, I agree with your comments about compensation. I wonder how they would deal with descendants who have both slave owners and slaves on the family tree. Would they only get half?

I don’t think any amount of compensation will bring freedom from the shackles of the past and the ability to move on, anyway. Feelings of perpetual enslavement, entrapment, unworthiness etc may have their roots in past episodes of hardship and brutality but the past is over. Only the self-limiting beliefs remain. Repeat a belief often enough and it feels like the truth.

Probably md but "the media" is a very broad Church, with the woke generation taking their cues from all sorts of on line platforms, and with high profile figures.

The Royals won't be shielded behind the editorial decisions of The Daily Mail...
