I am happy to be exposed as insufferably stupid, if someone could just explain to me how testing every resident of Liverpool will help "fight the spread of infection"?
Testing is a measure not a treatment, isn't it?
Presumably the asymptomatic people will be locked up? If they were testing everyone in the city at exactly the same time, it might make sense, and would at least expose the severity or mildness of the infection, and how many are or are not suffering from it, which might be useful.
But they are doing it in stages. So by the time the second group is tested the first ones are infected.
It makes no sense at all.
The original wording was that the army were there to "deliver and enforce" but it has become watered down overnight.
We are already penalised by having hospitals that covid patients are sent to from elsewhere, and lumped in with our figures, so presumably they will announce that the Liverpool infections are sky high, comparing our fully tested asymptomatic people with other cities who might well have a much higher rate?

I don't get it Honey either. I suppose to know how many in Liverpool within a 2 week period are infected sounds like it could be useful, but it is not obvious how?
If the numbers are lower than expected what difference does this make to the infection hospitalisation or death rate? If higher ditto, and so what? How does it help "control" or "fight" anything? What do you DO with such data.
Every fibre of my being resists conspiracy theories; but my resolve is being tested, and I am seriously starting to wonder for the first time: what might they be keeping from us?
Someone please point out the subtle detail I am missing, preferably before I turn into David Icke...

Why test half a million people simultaneously or separately?
What is the purpose!?
How does knowing how many people in the UK next week are Covid positive for example, assist us in any way?
I think the idea is that it stops people who have it without symptoms infecting people, because they will supposedly be isolating. The tests are ongoing for six weeks, so we should all have caught it from the stupidly unsafe testing centres by then and be either herd -immune or dead!
If it was all done at the same time it would settle the question of how rampant it really is, or isn't, and how trivial it is, or not.
I suppose them having everybody's DNA is a bonus. But no, there is absolutely no point at all, especially in a lockdown that is already meant to prevent infection.
And if the lockdown DOESNT prevent infection, what the hell is it for?

Quite. And if they know how many asymptomatic have it it would show that it was even more trivial than we already know. So what? Then what? The same numbers will still be hospitalised and dying whatever we know about infection levels, presenting the same NHS capacity issue and the same political problem of having made Covid deaths exceptional over other ways to die.
All beyond me what they are up to.
Wyot, at this point if they hand delivered a chimpanzee in a wig to every household in Britain in order to "save lives and protect the NHS" it wouldn't even surprise me.
I feel like I am trapped in a Brian Rix farce.

I cant think of any reason why they cant all be tested on the same day
A logistically massive feat - though yes, possible.
Last Saturday, Slovakia tested 2.58 million people - nearly half its population. Another day is being arranged for the other half.
Over 40,000 police, administrators, army, medics etc. - manned 5,000 sites around the country, for the swaps to be taken.
1% were found to be positive, and these people are quarantined - or about to be.
