TOPIC: A Sum Up on Trump
#202909
A Sum Up on Trump 4 Years, 9 Months ago
In many ways an infuriating man; terribly wrong about many things; infuriatingly non self aware. I suspect he is probably a crook. But he had several abilities. Particularly his refusal to let the media beat him. He was total anathema to media which tried on every level to destroy him and failed until now. Almost completely friendless in media he simply relied on direct (and often bonkers) Tweets. I hated his racist immigration attitude. But I thought he was spot on about Covid19 and trying to avoid the PanicDemic. Nobody seems to be willing to point out his incredible vote count - over 70 million, surely more than all other past Presidents got. Certainly, were it not for Covid, he'd have won a massive second term. Despite not doing it the conventionally correct way, a bit like Tony Blair and similarly good in some ways, bad in others, I think History will be rather kind to him. A far better President in hindsight than media credits him.

I think the Trump-Kim summit of 2018 was nothing short of a miracle. It reminded me of the Reykjavik summit of 1986. Inscrutable occasions but both have brought some peace to the world. I suspect Trump secretly realised that he had met his match with the North Korean leader and this combined with his deftness at playing the game of one-upmanship helped to secure the summit.

I think the Kim summit was truly remarkable too but I'm not sure what to make of it, or whether it enhanced peace. I seem to remember them falling out and the language and situation appearing to deteriorate on both sides to quite hairy levels?...But yes the boldness and directness to attempt it was admirable.

I think his 70 million vote with most of the mainstream media against him is incredible too, but says more about the changing face of what media people now trust, and how it is morphing to Twitter etc, than any Machiavellian cunning on the part of The Mango Mussolini.

He can go direct to people in his very direct way, and some see this as an authentic voice Vs the "establishment". His vulgarity and lies are a virtue to millions; frustrated, angry and alienated on so many issues.

To think Trump would have won a 'massive second term, were in not for Covid' is simply wrong

Not so; if you read the article. But the point is - we cannot know what would have happened if there had been no Covid over reaction but I reckon the economy would have done very well and Trump would have won with a landslide.

Events dear boy, events! But if you look at the opinion polls before the pandemic began, he was still behind ...

Well I can't argue against belief in opinion polls.
