I never really warmed to either Williams (actually I rather disliked the father) until an interview Venus did a week ago - it was a revelation; she was so funny and nice and attractive and bright, absolutely my kind of girl.

I phoned my Mum who said exactly the same. So this year we both rooted for her to win.

And boy did she deserve it. Beautiful tennis (I'm not a fan of women's tennis but so liked Martina when I met her that I became a fan).

Normally I'd root for the underdog and Bartoli was that (though seeded higher) but I plumped for Venus.

And I was very distressed by the way Bartoli held her racquet.

A definite star that Venus. Can someone introduce me please? I'm sure we'd be friends.
