TOPIC: More Amazon

More Amazon 4 Years, 3 Months ago
Amazon. Good for them! Sensible companies & individuals pay as little tax as legally possible, make massive profits & deserve every penny. Only useless companies (like The Guardian) spend time & money criticising instead of adapting their own setup. DOH!

The UK is the biggest enabler of tax evasion - a badge of honour?

It is tax avoidance that's bad, not evasion. Why would anyone pay more tax than they need to?

My old accountant (former teacher) would do both and I had to do the time. He either tried to be clever or just fuck it up for me. Nonetheless I never heard from again.

Barney is right to highlight the UK Gov's shameless record on enabling tax evasion, but I agree with others that companies & individuals do what they can to limit their tax burden. Increasingly I am seeing that the real stories just don't get written about. Amazon is NOT the story...

It's difficult for individuals to avoid tax - HMRC is surprisingly efficient. Easier though for foreign corporations trading here.

Although the tax advisers of Google, Facebook etc. are just doing their jobs - there are inequities. So many loopholes, using countries who exist (almost exclusively) on tax evasion income.

One domestic example. The Wetherspoons owner sold shares recently (worth millions/massive profit) on the back of UK taxpayer support.

We simply paid for the company's staff wages through furloughing, keeping the shares price higher - than when the pubs were open!

When countries are borrowing heavily (to fight Covid), it's perverse for the UK to lead the facilitation of tax avoidance by multinationals.

In the past year, our National Debt has increased by over £300 billion - yet we help Google, Nike and the rest to pay little or no tax.

These companies are benefiting by countries injecting billions into their economies - allowing consumers to buy more goods and services from them.

At the same time, the UK leads other countries in providing schemes for them to avoid tax - and so exponentially increase these multinationals' profits and value.

They (and their shareholders) just can't believe their good fortune - with all major stock markets hitting all time highs in the past year - thanks (to a significant degree) to UK taxpayers' help and generosity.

there is enough money to pay for EVERYTHING if tax avoidance (most of it dodgy) was clamped down on.

Really, admiring tax scammers is insulting to all wage earners...but if they had the same rights I would agree.

If they paid staff correctly I would agree.

Why does Jeff Bezos need $190Billion? Wouldn't 20 billion be enough at his age which he could never ever spend?.

Bill Gates is having trouble giving his billions away.

i HAVE NEVER used Amazon..I THINK IT'S THE UGLIEST WEBSITE Visually ghastly

I find everything I've ever wanted elsewhere.

Only buy books from bookstores..they can order in whatever you want and they look nice and are fun to browse about

## I'd be furious if Amazon didn't stock BRUSH WITH FAME Charles Pooter Lives

Never a truer statement.

Those paying 40% tax (or more) in the UK, cringe when they see an external Facebook investor paying nothing on huge gains.

When non-resident companies and shareholders earning billions here - pay nothing towards our infrastructure.

Including the NHS - which their employees are encouraged to use.

The first thing that Biden is trying to sort - even though the fix will reduce US tax revenues.

But instead of slating firms for doing something perfectly legal, shouldn't we be asking why the loopholes were created? Who benefits?

Netflix shares went up over 60% last year.

Having a few of those shares, I benefited.

But I paid tax (in the UK) on the gain.

The company paid almost nothing, anywhere.

Just like most of its investors.

If Google is such a bloody friend, you might as well google yourself into oblivion on it and leave us in peace, Gail.

The article like all poorly presented articles is very misleading even when stating truth and facts. Huge sales and no corporation tax does not equal tax avoidance or tax evasion. It is the profits that count minus previous losses.

The companies pay VAT on vatable items I am sure that amounts to huge tax revenues plus they pay over taxes on wages. Probably all sorts of other taxes import duties etc. Plus aids the economy and wages thus spend in the economy that incurs more taxes.

It is more likely that the constant new tax rules are more going the way like labour's 90+ percent tax and the death duties hitting those with stately homes both past unfairness to those who often through long history of hard work build up their resources. I exclude leaders like Trump who always push for low corporation taxes. (And many have acquired assets by unfair means as well)

I am not saying mischief does not happen, but it would need to be well researched and presented in a very clear manner to make sense and make a reasonable case. And would exclude banting around sales turnover which means absolutely nothing out of context of costs and profits plus past losts and all sorts of other factors.

Stupid Barney doesn't care about the thousands of workers who become unemployed when a company decides to base itself in a more favourable tax country. The brain dead can only see the simplistic, tabloid headline, slogans. "Why should they pay no tax when I pay masses?". DOH!!!
