We are about to be told that "cautious hugging" is okay in the UK.
They will graciously allow this in the face of a threat that saw zero people die on Monday "with covid". Some people believe (in the absence of an evidence base) that if we aren't restricted still Covid could get out of control again and pose a risk to 0.004% of people now that the vulnerable are vaccinated.
Fair enough; it's been a tough year and we would all love it if Covid just went away completely. But am I alone in thinking: what is this actually all about anymore? Really, what is going on? In one sentence, anyone, why are there any restrictions anymore?

I can see the point I THINK Barney might be making, because if we are "supposed" to be only opening up when the transmission rate is low, it makes absolutely no sense to ignore hotspots and use national rates, because it cant stay contained unless they actually lock up those of us in the leper colonies.
(I would rather that, actually than have everyone else suffer)
I am happy if they scrap lockdowns forever and just let us get on with it and never mention it again. Great!
I'd have been ok with closing borders when infections had almost vanished and let us carry on as normal until everyone was vaccinated. Great!
What I care about is the stupid palaver and drama of people on podiums telling us we must follow "the science" and then they ignore it.

Yes what you and we all are sick of is the politics. There has never been one "science" of Covid. There has always been choice, and its exercise is political. Viruses do kill some people. It is about proportionality of response to one in particular, when the response is also damaging. But this is never discussed and people like Barney (who I am glad you can interpret...) never even try to make the case. It is the absence of intelligence in the debate (whatever one's views) that so frustrates me.

I don’t trust it, the government and media are pushing the vaccines down our throats but are brushing away the side affects. When I go to South Africa I get numerous vaccines to try stop me getting some of the diseases. However the media aren’t forcing the cholera or hepatitis inoculation.
