One hundred years ago today, extreme violence broke out in Tulsa, Oklahoma killing between 50 and 300 black people.

Armed white mobs had decended on the area to kill and burn down the homes and businesses of successful blacks who lived there.

Because Tulsa was prosperous and thriving, white people were jealous and encouraged to take lethal action by the Klu Klux Klan and other racist organisations.

Dubbed the 'Black Wall Street' due to its financial prowess, the area was (until the attacks in 1921) deemed to be an example of how segregation should work.

But the civil rights movements gained momentum as a result although it took several more decades for equality to rear its head. J Biden is to visit the town this week.
