TOPIC: The best football game ever?

The best football game ever? 4 Years, 1 Month ago
Sunday Euros - Belgium vs Portugal. My favourite footballer for years was Ronaldo (I met him once in a hotel in Marrakech). Then along came De Bruyne - even better and totally different. One is an amazing technical superstar; the other the best team player ever. I'm rooting for Belgium to win the Euros but this should be a great game. In Sevile. One of my favourite cities.

On paper, this game has all the ingredients of a super-match; but, so often when the stakes are so high, a stalemate occurs. The sides cancel each other out, because losing means failure.

The best players are man-marked by specialists whose tactics can literally be close to the bone. Pele, for instance, was virtually assaulted (on the pitch) during the World Cup in England.

Since then (1966), red and yellow cards have been introduced and curtailed vicious tackles etc; but the hope is that genius will be seen in Seville, from a player who can rise above everything - and everyone.

The huge earnings gaps must have some effect on team performance.

This one is going to be interesting. From what I have seen Belgium favourites and De Bruyne as JK says best team player around. But Ronaldo is on the pitch...Can an individual power his team to overcome Belgium?

Nearly fell asleep...what a dull first half. Ronaldo may as well not be on the pitch & De Bruyne misplacing passes...Fingers crossed the goal will liven it up!

Cracking second half; great entertainment. Hoping to see an Italy (or France) V Belgium final. Obviously England in the final would be better...but I think they will be going home Tuesday....

Hope De Bruyne is OK. Hope Hazard is OK. Great Hazard Minor goal. I think England may surprise us all (and the Germans) with Saka, a bundle of energy. As long as Kane returns to us, please. If it's an England/Belgium final I'll be most confused!

Unfortunately, I doubt very much whether Southgate will start with Saka. We may see him for 15 mins if they are losing. I thought he was terrific last game. Southgate is very conservative. Kane is essential to progress but he hasn't turned up yet. He needs to play as a striker; I'm fed up seeing him too far back playing midfield. I would play Saka from start and order Kane to stay near the German penalty area.
