Why is London such a shithole these days ? It had it's issues about 20 years ago but nothing like today, I have noticed that the media always ignore the black on black violence in the capital. CCTV are pointless they are only good if they are working, record clear images and working in the right locations.

I don't remember the police being about and out as I grew up during the Troubles. However I spoke my neighbours again this morning for coffee - who remember seeing police being out and about 24/7. Are the police just looking at social media for naughty insults at their desks ?

When my 3 sisters went out when I was young, I always asked them to call me has soon as they were back home. Two of sisters still call me or talk to me when they walk home. However no one should have to do it,

I'm not sure I agree with the analysis GM. Crime stats are notoriously unreliable, but there have been downward trends in many areas for years. This awful case: pretty girl murdered by random man? Thankfully you are even more likely to die of Covid than this and it is hardly new - depressingly as old as time. Gangs are a problem sure; but there were gangs of "cut-purses" and much more violence against the person in Victorian London. Things are much safer now than then. Depends on what time periods you view it. 24/7 media though makes it all feel very close and new...

This crime has become much more common recently. Possibly fuelled by an increasingly misogynistic culture.

It seems that the media were only interested once they found out she was killed by a stranger, and not her partner, as is usual.

Looks more complicated now doesn't it with police interested in two asian men and her being asian. We don't know yet but could easily be an "honour killing". Yes increasingly misogynistic society - but certain cultures within it - only we aren't allowed to say this; or point out that gang culture in London is largely driven by one ethnic group. Or that Islamic terrorists are driven by religious goals as much as anything else, and their deeds are sanctioned by their religious book; just as the bible champions genocide & slavery and stokes hatred as well as love. Also that men can't be women biologically. Or that men accused of sex crimes may be innocent and not automatically part of a sexually oppressive conspiracy.

We can believe that we should be able to say this while also: welcoming asian and afro carib immigration but expecting them to obey our laws without being racists, allow people to worship whichever relgion they wish but obey the law and not harm people, wish men who wish to identify love and live as "women" all the best while not going along with a biological fiction that can see women oppressed by having men in their changing rooms or prison cells, believe at the same time that rape is appalling but a man accused of it is not guilty of it just because of the existence of an accusation.

It is much easier to signal "goodness" than it is to admit complication and uphold that with freedom comes personal responsibility.

But I digress - yes we don't know what this was about yet but notice the difference to Sarah Everard - where are the street demos sisters? The outrage? What is the difference, I wonder...?
