Just saw it (in brilliant iMax) and after a few minutes thought YES this is wonderful. Best thing about the original was the finger clicking and StevieBoy starts his version with it. Superb. Someone has made this who really "got" the classic. But as it went on I went off it a bit. It really doesn't make the most of the marvellous music. OK. I'm a Music Producer (which probably means I'm a better musical maker than film maker). Spielberg is a fantastic film maker and right back on form in this but it is a better film than it is a musical. Great idea to include Rita Moreno until you think "Hold on; splendid idea for promoting the movie but does it add to the film?". Answer - a resounding NO. Somewhere is one of the greatest love songs ever written and should NOT be sung by an octogenarian. Other songs are also less good (Officer Crupke is awful). Some work (America is incredible and the small black kid steals the movie with his ten seconds). For me - 3/5. Pretty good but not great.
