One of the lesser known aspects of the 2018 debacle was that Surrey Police used terrorist legislation in order to bug my phones and sit outside my house 24 hours a day for 6 months doing "surveillance". Obviously this revealed nothing. The was nothing to discover. But at trial the prosecution asked the judge for total media silence on this. And demanded that my defence team should not be shown the results as it might endanger the nation. Refused, of course. Why evidence that nothing was going on should endanger the nation was not made clear. Of course, it might (and did) endanger the prosecution case. Thank God I had that rare creature - an honest and intelligent judge, who saw straight through the subterfuge. But it still puzzles me that such huge expense was continued after it became clear I was NOT a Vile Pervert. Were there not more important things for our taxes to be spent on? And, after I was acquitted and the police behaviour described as a "debacle", wouldn't any Chief Constable have hit the roof? CC Ephgrave did, of course, resign but PCC Munro hanged on in there for another year or two (thanks to Covid) before being dumped by outraged Surrey voters.
Police bosses think of things like this as fine (if wrong) policing. You decide if you agree.
