Sad news; Charlie was a colleague when I was there spending ten years writing a page a week. Great newspaper to write for. Excellent subs. Always checked before altering a comma of copy. Paid on time. Dave Banks (Assistant Editor) passed recently. Dropping like flies - I suppose I'm at that age.

The old trick for game shows in those days - especially if the producers (Michael Hurll being one of them) knew they were crap - was to invite the tabloid TV critics on as guests, and then schedule their episodes for the last in the run. That was because the producers knew that, even if the critics wanted to savage the show, their vanity meant they loved being seen on TV, so they had to keep encouraging viewers to stick with the series so as not to miss their own appearance. Charlie Catchpole was always easy to tame that way.
