just watched this brilliant film by Rupert Everett but boy, did it make me depressed.

I had nightmares.

Everett was brilliant and this film does him so much credit.

He really brought home how shabbily Wilde was treated and how ghastly that Bosie was (who became a raging right wing anti-Semite in later years).

I knew Rupert long before he became famous (Brush With Fame #99).
He was also shabbily treated in the media in his early days.. for being gay & not admitting it ? ..I think really because he was Upper Middle Class and perceived as snobbish (he's not).

He is a superb author.

# Everett's book on making the film is a great read.

I think I've had enough Oscar Wilde for now.

Wilde, for me, is a very rich dessert best consumed in infrequent sittings.

I have always been in two minds about the depth of his literary talent, but realise a lot of people feel very differently.

It is a bit like PG Wodehouse: I can't help but love the rich, witty brilliant prose; but can't shake the feeling that he wrote the same novel about a hundred times...

And the sheer relentless drive to be funny on every line I find exhausting...

I like Oscar Wilde, but I am uncomfortable with him being portrayed as a martyr and hero for breaking the law.

Not agreeing with (stupid) legislation is not an excuse to do whatever you like and treat people like shit, in my view.

Correct Honey and Bosie was clearly a real shit.
But Hedda is right; that film is fabulous.
